Spirits soared at the grand opening of the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center and Residence in Bayview recently. The joyous event, sponsored by the Board of Directors of Bayview Senior Services and developer McCormack Baron Salazar, was filled with fanfare, music, food, prayer and stirring speeches.

The Board of Directors of Bayview Senior Services and McCormack Baron Salazar hosted the sunny June 25 ribbon cutting ceremony.  Mayor Willie Brown served as Master of Ceremonies and other dignitaries speaking included current San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee, Dr. Arelious Walker, SF Supervisor Malia Cohen, and California State Senator Mark Leno.

Cathy Davis, the Executive Director of Bayview Senior Services and the widow of Dr. Davis, gave a particularly stirring speech.  Shortly after, the ceremonial ribbon cutting was accompanied by a joyous rendition of “Movin’ On Up,” by the Bayview/Western Addition Combined Community of Voices Choir.

Tom Giarrusso, Nibbi’s Project Executive for the BGI/Nibbi joint venture team that built the facility, said speeches from two of the new tenants were especially gratifying to him.  “It was a nice touch…They were overjoyed with how nice their rooms are.”

The opening day activities included tours of the attractively designed 121-unit community.  This beautiful facility, with architecture by David Baker Architects, Michael Willis Architects and Gelfand Partners, is a major new achievement for BGI Nibbi. Together, we are already working on a number of other large housing projects for underserved communities.

In the case of this beautiful new community, Dr. Davis’ vision for the elderly in Bayview has finally – and vibrantly – come true.
