Nibbi Breaks Ground on Dr. George W. Davis Senior Housing and Senior Center
Posted by: Nibbi Brothers | Comments Off on Nibbi Breaks Ground on Dr. George W. Davis Senior Housing and Senior Center
“A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.” – Maya Angelou
The Dr. George W. Davis Senior Housing and Senior Center broke ground on March 1, 2014 at the site on 1751 Carroll Ave., in the Bayview. Named after the late Dr. George W. Davis, a prominent gerontologist and Bayview Hunters Point community leader for more than three decades, the project will house and provide services for the district’s underserved elderly population.
Nibbi and the Baines Group, who are partnering on the project, attended the event; as did local dignitaries, including former Mayor Willie L. Brown, US. Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, Mayor Ed Lee.
“We are here today because of a great soul: Dr. George W. Davis, who is bringing us together to break ground for 120 units of senior housing and a brand new senior center for Bayview Hunters Point,” said Cathy Davis, exectuve director of Bayview Hunters Point Multipurpose Senior Services and wife of the late Dr. Davis, who passed in 2010. “It was his vision that caught the attention of the hundreds of people who made this day possible,” she continued. Through the relationships he built, those of us who carry on his work have been able to implement his plan for the seniors of Bayview to age in place in their community.”
The project is being designed by David Baker + Partners, with whom Nibbi has worked on multiple projects (including the award-winning Armstrong Place Senior Housing project, also in the Bayview District). The new 64,369-sq.-ft. complex will consist of four buildings with 121 one- and two-bedroom affordable senior rental units. Amenities will include common areas and property management offices, as well as sitting, dining and exercise rooms. The project also will provide residents with a 13,500-sq.-ft. at-grade senior center that will house support services, two conference rooms, a kitchen, lounges and staff offices. The project is pursuing LEED Gold.
McCormack Baron Salazar (MBS) is the owner of the project. Nibbi and Baines Group are also partnered MBS’ Alice Griffith project.

Nibbi Concrete Wins Kaiser Excellence in Safety Award
Posted by: Nibbi Brothers | Comments Off on Nibbi Concrete Wins Kaiser Excellence in Safety Award
Nibbi Concrete, which recently completed a $15.7 million project for the new Kaiser Oakland Hospital Project, yesterday received an “Excellence in Safety Award” from Kaiser Permanente / Zurich / McCarthy Building Co.
The new Kaiser Oakland Hospital is a 13-story, 620,000-sq.-ft. structural steel building. Nibbi Concrete’s scope of work included all structural excavation, foundation work, concrete retaining walls, and all place and finish of structural concrete slabs for the hospital and hospital loading dock.
One of the unique aspects of the project was that Nibbi Concrete had to control the temperature of the concrete in the foundations to prevent cracking. The team accomplished this by injecting liquid nitrogen into the mix during placement, covering the pile caps and grade beams with thermal blankets, and monitoring the heat of the concrete both at the core and near the surface.
“This was a large and highly complex project with more than 78,000 man hours, yet we had zero lost-time injuries on the project,” says Site Safety Coordinator Erick Rodriguez. “That number doesn’t begin to describe the amount of work and complexity of the tasks our carpenters and laborers were faced with on this project. Overall, this was a job well done by the entire Concrete team, under some tough conditions.”

Joseph P. Mazzola Training Center Wins CICA Award
Posted by: Nibbi Brothers | Comments Off on Joseph P. Mazzola Training Center Wins CICA Award
Nibbi’s Joseph P. Mazzola Training Center last night was recognized by CICA (Commercial Interiors Contractors Association) as 2012’s Best Bay Area Adaptive-Reuse Project.
The Mazzola Training Center–outfitted with training stations for the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems seen in all building types, including residential, commercial, mixed-use, clean rooms, laboratories, hospitals and data centers–provides members of U.A. Local 38 with the opportunity to build their careers through hands-on experience with the most advanced equipment currently used in the plumbing trade.
The project team (Nibbi, CAS Architects and Environmental Building Strategies) employed four key strategies on the project to improve constructability and maximize quality on this complex project:
- the separation of the job into multiple phases to maximize funding opportunities and allow the owner to meet all building objectives
- collaboration among the builder, designer, environmental consultant and the center’s teachers in the design and construction processes
- the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to coordinate the mechanical and plumbing systems
- the pursuit and achievement of LEED Silver certification
“Adapting a previous building into a highly functional educational and training facility is a complex process,” says Jake Arlein, Director of Certification Services, Environmental Building Strategies, “yet the project team and owners pushed the standards even higher by pursuing LEED Silver certification. The result is a 75% reduction of pre-renovation lighting power density, a 25% reduction in Title 24 energy code requirements, and a 50% reduction of lighting energy consumed compared to buildings of similar size.”

Armstrong Place Senior and Family Housing was listed this week as one of Urban Land Institute’s winners of its 2012 Global Awards for Excellence.
Fourteen developments were selected as winners of the competition, widely acknowledged as the land use industry’s most prestigious recognition program. Each of the winning projects, selected from nearly 200 entries throughout the world, has been successful in achieving a high standard of excellence in design, construction, economics, planning, and management.
According to jury chairman Randall K. Rowe, chairman of Green Courte Partners, LLC, Lake Forest, Ill., this year’s winners demonstrate ingenuity, innovation, and long-term thinking that can be embraced in other scenarios. “This year’s 14 ULI Global Award winners are from eight countries and represent a broad array of property types and uses. They are dramatic examples of the application of ULI best practices to real estate development and their enduring impact on diverse communities across the globe,” Rowe said.
Why Armstrong Place? With 370,200 square feet of higher density residential and 7,600 square feet of ground floor retail, Armstrong Place was descibed by ULI as “an important catalyst for the revitalization of the Third Street corridor in San Francisco. Read more about the award here.
