San Jose Museum of Art

New Addition to the San Jose Museum of Art.

Project Summary

Established in 1969, San Jose Museum of Art (SJMA) presents art ranging from modern masterpieces to recent works by young, emerging artists. The Museum’s permanent collection—1,400 varied artworks from the 20th and 21st centuries—has a special focus on West Coast art, seen in an national and international context. The 45,000 square-foot addition to the existing building extends east from the historic museum on San Fernando Street in downtown San Jose. It consists of two above-grade and one below-grade levels housing gallery and storage space with state-of-the-art mechanical control systems. The project was split into two separate contracts; shell and core, and interiors. SJMA serves 100,000 people a year, including 37,000 school children. SJMA is the largest provider of arts education in Santa Clara County. Initiatives such as the award-winning school program “Let’s Look at Art” Program and SJMA’s participatory activity stations in the galleries further distinguish the Museum as an innovator in museum education.
