COMPANY
PROFILE
For over 55 years Nibbi Brothers General Contractors has been building
structures to meet the challenges of time. A carpenter from Italy, Marino
Nibbi set up his first shop in South of Market San Francisco in 1950. Jobs
that came to him were small, but friend told friend of the excellence of his
work, and business grew. To meet increasing demand, Marino’s brother Pete
joined him, and the firm of Nibbi Brothers was born. It expanded rapidly,
moving to its Potrero Hill office on 17th Street in 1953. A second
generation of Nibbi brothers joined Marino as his sons, Sergio and Larry,
joined the business in 1957 and 1965 respectively. Today, a third generation
of Nibbi brothers is involved in the management of the firm.
Sergio’s sons Bob and Michael share ownership with a dedicated pair of
industry veterans, Rick Fedick and John Kugler. Together they
bring over 70 years of experience to the company. In 2005, Nibbi Brothers moved to a larger space in Potrero Hill.
Nibbi’s goal is client satisfaction. We make the extra effort necessary to
get a project off to a smooth start and to bring it to a successful
completion. Our enthusiasm and thoroughness results in excellent service and
a smooth construction sequence for owners and architects. The trust and
confidence Nibbi instills in its clients has led to repeat business, client
recommendations and given us the opportunity to expand our areas of
expertise.
Nibbi’s
Primary Market Sectors:
Beginning in
the 1980’s, Nibbi tackled increasing amounts of negotiated work and began to
take on challenges unique to the Bay Area, like certain soil conditions.
Today, more than 85% of our work is negotiated and involves pre-construction
services. Projects like the Wax Museum, Pier 1, West Portal Elementary and
Boudin at the Wharf all provide excellent examples of Nibbi’s ability to
work successfully in the often challenging Bay Area soil conditions. We
continue to prove our ability to take on difficult assignments and bring
them to successful completion.
In the last five years, Nibbi has built more than 1,500 units of housing. We
currently have over 2,000 units under construction or in pre-construction.
We are building housing in San Francisco, the South Bay and the East Bay.
We continue to expand our expertise in concrete, forming Nibbi Concrete in
2004. Our experience in this area includes parking garages, housing and
healthcare. Nibbi Concrete works on jobs with Nibbi as its general
contractor as well as acting as a subcontractor to large CM firms.
In addition to multi-family housing and concrete, Nibbi has developed
expertise in other areas, including K-12 and higher education and seismic
upgrade/historic preservation.
As proud as we are of our accomplishments to date, it is the future of Nibbi
that excites us most. We have sustained a consistent period of growth in the
past five years and are financially strong with a bonding capacity of $150
million. Several factors contribute to this success.
SELF-PERFORMED WORK & COST CONTROL
In addition to Nibbi Concrete, we also have the ability to self-perform
rough and finish carpentry, with over 100 skilled carpenters and laborers in
the field. We believe that self-performing certain scopes of work serve as a
benefit for both us and our clients, as it can provide schedule, cost and
safety control. We have found self-performing work can be of great benefit
in reducing the cost of construction, as well as improving coordination and
communication in the field due to better coordinated subcontractors.
Our estimating department performs take-offs of the concrete and rough
framing work but also accepts subcontractors' bids for these trades. If a
subcontractor's bid is lower than our own estimate, we use their bid in
pricing a job. This gives us the flexibility to be as competitive as
possible in any market condition.
SAFETY
A safe project is a successful project and as such Nibbi goes through great
lengths to ensure that the highest level of safety is practiced on its
jobsites. Excellence in safety and meeting production goals are not
opposing forces or mutually exclusive goals and by integrating safety into
the framework of how we do work, it is almost always a win-win scenario.
Nibbi’s safety efforts include and aggressive training program, building
relationships with owners, subcontractors, trade unions etc. We strive to
create a culture where workers value safety and take personal responsibility
for their safety and the safety of others.
These areas are critical to our success and Nibbi’s commitment to them
shows. Our Experience Modifier Rating (EMR) is one of the best in the
industry at .58. Our current state ranking is in the top 5, making us one of
the safest contractors in California. Rick Fedick, Nibbi CFO supervises the
safety/risk management department which is led by Dr. Kendon Dressel,
Director of Environmental Health and Safety. Training for our field
superintendents, foremen and site-specific safety managers include OSHA
30-hour training and CPR among others.
Nibbi’s volunteer safety committee was formed in 2001. With representatives
from the laborers, carpenters, project management, estimating and finance,
the committee meets monthly to ensure its plans and ideas are put into
action.
LABOR RELATIONS
Nibbi is a union contractor, signatory to the carpenters' and laborers'
master agreements. We have always enjoyed cooperative labor relations with
union locals. Larry Nibbi is a Trustee for the Carpenters' Pension Trust
Fund for Northern California and the Carpenters' Annuity Trust Fund for
Northern California, and has the respect and trust of local labor officials.
Our positive relationship with the unions allows us to quickly resolve
potential problems.
MANAGEMENT & COST TECHNOLOGIES
Nibbi employs several technological tools and web-based solutions to
effectively manage costs and schedules. All our project sites are connected
to the main office via the Internet.
Our accounting department utilizes Timberline Construction Accounting
Software, the most powerful cost analysis and reporting tool offered today.
We use Primavera's SureTrak Project Management software to create and manage
construction schedules. This program produces schedules that are thorough,
readable and easy to follow. In-house printing capability allows us to
produce revisions and updates in a minimal amount of time. We also use
Prolog Manager Software for comprehensive document control including meeting
minutes, job logs, and daily reports.
CUSTOMER SERVICE / QUALITY CONTROL
Quality is not just a concept at Nibbi. Quality is the result of
hard-working, detail-oriented carpenters, superintendents, estimators and
project managers. Quality is a carpenter foreman who will not hesitate to
stop, tear out and re-install formwork when he sees that it was not
installed correctly the first time. Quality is an estimator capable of
identifying budget problems and knowledgeable enough to suggest the
solution. Quality is a project manager who recognizes and reacts decisively
to schedule impacts, regardless of whether it is a rain delay or material
shortage. The level of service delivered at each level of our company
results in the quality project sought by an owner. Estimates are accurate,
materials are installed correctly and schedules are set and kept. Quality is
not just a concept at Nibbi; quality is the result of our efforts to hand
you a building exceeding your expectations.
