South Hall is the oldest building on the U.C. campus and a state historical landmark. This seismic upgrade of this unreinforced masonry building in 1988 was quite an achievement. Conventional strengthening techniques were rejected due to the need to maintain the building's beautiful interior woodwork. A unique approach was used where holes were drilled vertically down the building, reinforced and grouted to strengthen the walls. This successfully strengthened the masonry and stone exterior. Existing wood floors were replaced with concrete in areas to add diaphragm strength. The project was awarded recognition for outstanding renovation from the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association.
