We completed the Brewer
Island Elementary School, located less than one mile from the PJCC site,
in 1995. The project consists of nine structures, including classrooms, a
multipurpose room, kitchen and administrative offices.
This project is an excellent example of our cooperative and creative
approach to value engineering. The project was competitively bid in
October of 1994, but all bids were over the district's budget. Due to a
commitment to the city, the school district needed to have the school
completed by September of 1995 or face losing the land. As low bidder, we
met with the owner and architect and set a value engineering goal to
enable them to meet their budget and get the project completed on time.
We saved a total of $686,000 and completed the project in ten months,
moving the students in on time.
The foundations for the school structures are an interesting solution to
the problem of working in the Bay mud. The building foundations were
designed as a waffle slab with styrofoam infill between the grade beams
to minimize the overall weight of the slab and allow for anticipated
settlement.
We worked cooperatively with the neighbors during the construction of the
project, coordinating construction traffic and working hours with the
local residents. We also committed to opening the kindergarten building
before completion of the entire project to meet the needs of the school
district and residents. |
